Your first-week checklist.
Polk City is the perfect example of why a mailing address and municipal boundary should not be allowed to impersonate each other. Confirm the property first, then the rest gets much easier.

Utilities & Home Services
Polk City runs its own water, sanitary sewer and stormwater services. Its water supply combines City treatment capacity with water purchased from Des Moines Water Works, but residents deal with Polk City for the municipal account.
City of Polk City
Start, stop or change municipal water/sewer service through City Hall at 515-984-6233 or the City's utility platform. The City FAQ currently says customers who are not property owners should expect a $150 deposit; confirm current deposit and waiver rules when opening the account.
POLK CITY UTILITIES →MidAmerican Energy
Polk City's current utility directory lists MidAmerican under gas and electric. Verify service for the exact property rather than treating the mailing address as proof of utility territory.
MIDAMERICAN ENERGY →Check the Exact Address
Provider availability can vary inside and around the 50226 postal area. Use address-level availability tools before scheduling installation, particularly if the property is outside corporate limits.
CHECK BROADBAND BY ADDRESS →Trash, Recycling & Getting Rid of Stuff
City Hall handles cart requests, MWA supports the collection/disposal system, and the local brush site is where the corporate-limit distinction suddenly becomes very real.
The local brush-pile service at 409 E. Northside Drive is restricted to Polk City residents inside corporate limits who receive Polk City utility service, with identification required. A Polk City mailing address by itself is not enough.
Request residential garbage/recycling carts through City Hall. Current City information lists garbage collection on Friday, with carts at the curb by 6 a.m.
CITY UTILITIES →Curb It! recycling is currently every other Friday. Use the live City/MWA calendar around holidays instead of permanently memorizing alternating weeks.
RECYCLING INFO →Polk City participates in Compost It! and also operates the local recycling/brush facility. Eligibility for the brush pile is narrower than the postal ZIP and should be checked before loading up.
BRUSH + RECYCLING SITE →Polk City is included in MWA's large-item system. Furniture, appliances, electronics and hazardous materials can follow different procedures, so use the material-specific disposal guide.
LARGE-ITEM OPTIONS →License, Voting & Vehicles
Polk City itself is in Polk County, so the county paperwork is refreshingly straightforward once we've survived the city-limit discussion.
Iowa DOT
The Ankeny DMV at 6310 SE Convenience Boulevard is a practical state service center. Appointments are recommended and walk-ins are accepted.
ANKENY DMV →Polk County Treasurer
Polk City residents use Polk County for vehicle title and registration. Title-transfer appointments are required, and new Iowa residents generally have 30 days to title/register.
POLK COUNTY VEHICLES →Polk County Elections
Polk County administers voter registration and local elections. Use the County and Iowa Secretary of State tools to update registration and verify the polling place after moving.
POLK COUNTY ELECTIONS →For the November 3, 2026 General Election, the researched statewide schedule lists October 19 at 5 p.m. as the preregistration and mailed-absentee-request deadline.
Schools, Library & Homeowner Resources
North Polk has a major physical presence in Polk City, but postal-city, corporate-city and school-district boundaries are separate things. Use the actual residence for enrollment.
North Polk Community Schools
North Polk's current new-student process requires proof of residency. West Elementary in Polk City serves preschool–grade 2 and Big Creek Elementary serves grades 3–5, but exact district eligibility should still be verified from the residence.
NEW-STUDENT REGISTRATION →Community Development
Decks, fences, detached sheds, remodels and additions all warrant a City permit check before construction. New homeowners should verify requirements before the lumber arrives.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT →Polk City Post Office
The City's utility directory lists the local post office at 302 N. 3rd Street. Remember: “Polk City, IA 50226” is a postal designation, not automatic proof that the property is inside municipal limits.
USPS CHANGE OF ADDRESS →Moving With Pets
Polk City requires an annual City license for every dog or cat six months or older. The current research confirms the requirement and a penalty after March 31, but not a current fee we trust enough to publish.
Licensing is handled through the Clerk's Office. Check the City's current pet-license page for the current fee and documentation requirements rather than relying on an older fee table.
A little planning goes a long way.
The city-limit distinction matters for services. In winter, the declared snow ordinance matters for where every extra vehicle goes.
No specific residential moving-truck or portable-container permit was verified in the research. If the move will block a public road, sidewalk or right-of-way, contact City Hall/Public Works before delivery rather than inventing your own traffic plan.
When a snow ordinance is declared, vehicles may not be left on public streets, alleys or on-street parking areas. City guidance specifically tells residents to remove vehicles when snowfall reaches one inch or more or during an ice storm; violations can be ticketed or towed.
Medications, chargers, toiletries, clothes, paperwork and anything you'll want before the rest is unpacked. A labeled first-night bag remains undefeated by municipal boundaries.
Totes handle what you can pack.
